The Tough Life of a Bargain-Hunting Traveler

Old School Airline Hospitality
Our next series will cover New York’s new fashion Mecca, Brooklyn. But before getting to the streets and styles of our east coast location, we faced the arduous task of booking a cross-country flight.
We recently had the misfortune of dealing with Delta Airlines. Unlike the sleek seamless treatment we look forward to with the customer-friendly fashion industry, dealing with Delta was a heinous experience.
One and a half hours of “support” from Delta’s online “customer service” provided us with all the info we had already read on their site. They even gave us the opportunity to inform them of what was on their website.
Another two hours on the phone was more or less the same.
Four hours later, we earned our tickets.
Conclusion: Delta may have affordable tickets, but consider the value of your time before getting too excited about the $50 difference.
It’d be nice to think our experience was a fluke, but many airline companies have serious customer service issues to deal with (have you heard the new song about United Airlines?).
Alternatively, companies like Jet Blue may not have the lowest prices but their customer service actually seems to be customer oriented (what a concept!). Jet Blue is taking customer service to new levels, including combing Twitter for complaints as a way of reaching out to disgruntled passengers.
If only we could find the perfect combination of Delta’s prices and Jet Blue’s courtesy.

How about this? I found a great fare LA to Manaus (Brazilian Amazon) for $700 RT one week before I wanted to go. What a deal! The flight down there was fine… but, when I came out of the rainforest back to Manaus to fly home, I went straight to the airport and waited for hours to someone to show up at their counter…. only to find out they had canceled the flight that night… and the next next night… And they didn’t even have staff in Manaus to sort it out on the spot… I had to spend one entire day making phone calls and sending faxes to Rio to sort it out. Next time I’ll fly with Copa Airlines!
